I am a Professor in the Department of Environment and Development Studies at United International University, Bangladesh. I am also an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at the Tropical Forests and People Research Centre, University of the Sunshine Coast (Australia), and an Honorary Research Associate Professor of Earth and Environment at Florida International University (USA). In addition, I am the Founding Director of the Centre for Research on Land-use Sustainability, an international platform dedicated to advancing research, consultancy, and evidence-based decision-making on sustainable land-use in the tropics. I am also a core member of the ALERT– Alliance of Leading Environmental Researchers & Thinkers, a global scientific thinktank working to strengthen the role of environmental science in policy and practice.
Alongside my research, I am actively involved in scholarly publishing and leadership. I currently serve as the Editor-in-Chief of Small-scale Forestry (Springer), Subject Editor of Ecosystem Health and Sustainability (AAAS), and Section Editor of Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution (Frontiers) and Sustainability (MDPI). My academic training in forestry, and natural resources and environmental management spans leading institutions in Australia (University of Queensland), Denmark (Copenhagen University), Germany (Technical University of Dresden), and Bangladesh (Shahjalal University of Science and Technology).
My research explores the interactions between people and nature, with a particular focus on forests, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable land-use. Over the years, my work has expanded from coupled human–natural systems to applied ecology and conservation, with current interests in forest and landscape restoration, carbon forestry, mangrove ecology, ecosystem services, and nature-based solutions. Through interdisciplinary research, international collaboration, and policy engagement, I aim to generate knowledge that advances science while supporting more sustainable and resilient ecosystems and communities.
